During the Sziget Festival it's rush hour around the clock on line H5
During the Sziget Festival, from 10 to 16 August 2023, MÁV-HÉV will offer an extended timetable to help visitors get to the event venue. Suburban railway line H5 will have an increased capacity and will run more frequently during the day. At night, trains will run every 10 minutes from Aquincum to the city centre and every hour from Batthyány tér to Szentendre.
Like in previous years, the fastest way to get to the Sziget Festival – one of Europe's biggest pop music and cultural events – is still taking suburban railway line H5. The Filatorigát stop – the 5th stop from Batthyány tér or the 11th stop from Szentendre – is just a few minutes' walk from the main entrance of the Sziget Festival at the K-bridge.
The organisers highlight that the pedestrian routes have changed compared to previous years: pedestrians and cyclists will not be allowed to enter the Sziget at the H-bridge entrance near the Szentlélek tér stop of the suburban railway. Visitors arriving by suburban railway should get off at Filatorigát, from where the main entrance of the Sziget (at the K-bridge) is available on foot.
Just like in the previous years, MÁV-HÉV is preparing for the festival with significantly increased capacity, as during the Sziget Festival, service of suburban railway line H5 will not stop for a minute, and each train will run with six cars. Filatorigát stop will be one of the busiest areas in Hungary on these days. On weekdays, 188 trains arrive at the stop in bots directions. A single train can carry up to 700-800 people at a time, in many cases with luggage, backpacks and camping equipment.
The railway company takes the necessary steps to serve the visitors: trains will run more frequently at all times from 8:00 on 10 August until 14:00 on 16 August. This means that during the morning and afternoon rush hours, trains will run every 6 minutes, while in other periods during the day, every 6-7 minutes on the Budapest section. So each time during the Sziget Festival will be "rush hour" on weekdays. At weekends, trains will run every 10 minutes at dawn and in the morning, every 6-7 minutes between 10:00 and 20:00, and every 10 minutes in the evening and at night until 6:00 the next day. This means that during the festival, as usual, suburban railway line will be in service around the clock. A train from Filatorigát to the city centre will be guaranteed every 10 minutes during the night, and there will also be night trains to Szentendre every 60 minutes. At busy stations and stops, staff will assist the passengers – as well as supervising safety, they will be happy to help the visitors find their way around.
At nighttime and at dawn, most trains arrive empty or with just a few passengers at Filatorigát stop, so almost all seating and standing areas are available for boarding. In order to avoid crowds, the security guards will help to ensure that passengers wait in similar numbers at each carriage of the 108-metre-long trains. As a passenger, it is also worth remembering that where the platform is crowded, the train will also be crowded after boarding – and where the platform is empty, there will be even free seats on the train.
On the Budapest section of suburban railway line H5 (between Batthyány tér and Békásmegyer), Budapest tickets and passes are valid, as well as with the Sziget Citypass by Budapest Card, which provides unlimited public transport within Budapest. The easiest way to plan journeys during the festival is to use the BudapestGO mobile application. Tickets for the suburban railway line section outside the capital (Békásmegyer – Szentendre) can also be purchased via the MÁV mobile application and are on sale at MÁV-START and BKK sales points.
MÁV-HÉV asks regular passengers to exercise caution and patience in view of the expected crowds on suburban railway line H5 between 10 and 16 August, and not to travel out of habit: watch out for each other! We wish all visitors of the Sziget Festival a good time!
